Vine Row Detection with Airbus' Pléiades Satellite Imagery

Enhancing Vineyard Management with High-Resolution Satellite Imagery

Understanding the inter and intra-plot heterogeneity of vineyards is crucial for ensuring the stability of wine production and income. By assessing vine vigor through SPOT satellite imagery, this offers a globally recognized service that addresses this challenge, catering to the needs of winegrowers and ultimately enhancing profitability and wine quality. The introduction of Pléiades Neo imagery opens up new possibilities for products and applications with higher resolution, enabling precision work at the vine row level and thereby enhancing the data accuracy.

Advancing Vine Vigor Assessments

The challenge lies in the ability to automatically detect vine rows using Pléiades Neo imagery across various agricultural practices, including different management systems, grassed and ungreased plots, and varying inter-row and inter-vine distances. By developing these capabilities, this provides more accurate vine vigor estimations, particularly for grassed vineyards. This advancement is crucial for optimizing vineyard management practices, as precise vigor assessments enable winegrowers to implement targeted interventions that improve vine health and grape quality.

Pléiades Neo images were acquired during the summers of 2021 and 2022 over vineyards in the Bourgogne, Bordeaux, and Vallée du Rhône regions. Two different methods for automatically detecting vine rows were tested, yielding promising preliminary results. The development and validation of these methods' performance across diverse vine plots to further develop an automatic tool for detecting missing vine plants; will not only enhance vine vigor estimations but also pave the way for innovative products, such as missing plant detection, which is essential for maintaining vineyard productivity and quality.

The Role of Pléiades Neo in Precision Agriculture

Airbus has achieved a remarkable advancement in Earth observation with the launch of its Pléiades Neo satellites, marking a significant milestone in remote sensing. These satellites, exclusively financed, manufactured, owned, and managed by Airbus, signify a leap forward in Earth observation capabilities for commercial, institutional, and governmental users. Comprising two identical spacecraft, each with a high resolution of 30 cm, the Pléiades Neo constellation revolutionizes Earth observation.

The constellation offers rapid tasking and the capability to revisit any point on Earth at least daily. Collectively, the satellites contribute around 1,000,000 km² of imagery to Airbus' repository daily. The acquired data is effortlessly accessible through Airbus' OneAtlas digital platform, offering immediate access to fresh and archived data, as well as powerful analytics tools. Their high-resolution imagery, characterized by unparalleled detail, enhances image analysis for both human experts and machine learning algorithms. This level of detection improves object recognition, providing a wealth of information for various applications.

Applications and Impact on the Viticulture Sector

The Pléiades Neo constellation excels in geolocation accuracy and spectral band information, facilitating a range of applications in the viticulture sector. The satellites are instrumental in risk analysis and damage assessment for natural hazards. This capability is crucial for vineyard management, as it enables timely responses to adverse weather conditions and other threats, ensuring the stability of wine production. Additionally, the high-resolution imagery allows for detailed monitoring of vine health and growth patterns, supporting the development of precision agriculture practices that enhance productivity and sustainability.

Sectors, Applications, and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

In the viticulture sector, the integration of Pléiades Neo imagery significantly improves several applications:

  1. Vineyard Management: The high-resolution data supports precise monitoring of vine health, vigor, and growth patterns. Key performance indicators include vine vigor consistency, detection of stressed areas, and the overall health index of the vineyard. By monitoring these KPIs, vineyard managers can make informed decisions to optimize irrigation, fertilization, and pest control strategies.

  2. Risk Analysis and Damage Assessment: The ability to quickly assess damage from natural hazards such as frost, drought, or disease outbreaks is enhanced by the Pléiades Neo constellation. KPIs in this area include the speed of damage detection, the extent of affected areas, and the effectiveness of mitigation measures. Rapid assessment allows for timely interventions, minimizing losses and preserving the quality of the grape harvest.

  3. Yield Prediction and Quality Control: Accurate yield prediction is vital for planning harvest and marketing strategies. Pléiades Neo imagery enables detailed analysis of vine vigor and health, leading to more reliable yield forecasts. KPIs include predicted yield accuracy, consistency of grape quality, and the efficiency of harvest operations. These insights help wine producers ensure a stable supply of high-quality grapes, enhancing both profitability and customer satisfaction.

  4. Environmental Sustainability: Monitoring environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices are essential for the long-term viability of viticulture. KPIs related to environmental sustainability include reductions in water usage, improvements in soil health, and the effectiveness of conservation measures. Pléiades Neo data supports the implementation of sustainable practices that reduce the environmental footprint of vineyard operations.

Future Prospects for Vine Management

The utilization of Pléiades Neo imagery for vine row detection represents a significant advancement in vineyard management. By offering higher resolution and more precise data, Pléiades Neo enhance vine vigor assessments and support the development of innovative solutions like missing plants detection. Airbus' Pléiades Neo satellite imagery underscores the importance of integrating cutting-edge technology into agricultural practices to address contemporary challenges. As the Pléiades Neo constellation continues to deliver unparalleled Earth observation capabilities, its impact on the viticulture sector will undoubtedly grow, driving improvements in sustainability, productivity, and wine quality.
